This is the first sermon that is recorded by Matthew and it gives the most detailed exposition of God’s ethical standards given in the Bible (How to live the Christian life). It’s important to look at the context in which they were given. Firstly, it was for the disciples not unbelievers. God had already given His nation, Israel the Ten Commandments but they were “Thou shalt not phrases”,(largely negative) evils one must avoid in daily life on this earth. Now, Jesus presents a positive message, you are blessed if you do these things. Jesus was not giving them some new laws. If He was, they are even tougher than the ten commandments. We of course know that we need Jesus righteousness (His death on the Cross) to be in a right relationship with God. We need the Holy Spirit to live this life. The Beatitudes are the result of the fruit of the Spirit. His disciples knew none of this. It is also important we hear what Jesus said to them after He had delivered the Beatitudes. “Do not think I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but fulfil. Matt 5: 17-19. Jesus then goes on to expound that sin is a heart issue (e.g. lust after a woman is as bad as adultery) |
